Psoriasis Treatment

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition characterized by scaly plaques especially on the knees, elbows and scalp. Psoriasis can affect the whole body at once or a just a few areas. In some patients, the rash is accompanied by joint pain in the hands, feet, knees, hips or other joints. This is known as psoriatic arthritis. Patients with psoriasis have an increased chance of more worrisome medical conditions, such as metabolic syndrome, and therefore should follow up with their primary care physician for their normal preventive screening measures.

Available Treatments

Treatment is directed at controlling the underlying inflammation. Intermittent usage of topical steroids creams is often employed for mild or localized psoriasis. Special medicated shampoos can be used for psoriasis of the scalp. For moderate psoriasis, ultraviolet light or oral medications can be used. Severe psoriasis can be treated with injectable medications that modulate the immune system. These medications are sometimes referred to as biologics.
