Mole Evaluations

What is a mole?

Moles are pigmented lesions on patients' skin. People can be born with moles or acquire them over their life. Most moles are acquired in childhood or early adulthood, but occasionally moles can develop later in life. When moles are "small round and brown," they are usually benign. Moles that are irregular in size, shape or color, or that suddenly change, are more worrisome and should be evaluated by a dermatologist.

Why should I get a mole evaluation?

In addition to the moles that you show your dermatologist, he or she may note other moles that require additional observation. Worrisome or changing moles may be suggestive of a type of skin cancer called melanoma. Effectively managing normal or atypical moles is a team effort between the patient and the doctor.
